Outrigger Canoe & Kayaking on the Island of Hawaiʻi
For thousands of years, Hawaiians have relied on outrigger canoes for fishing and transportation. These six-person vessels are still widely used for recreation, and outrigger canoe racing is even our official state sport. For an authentically Hawaiian family adventure, visitors are encouraged to take a guided tour of the stunning Kona Coast or Kohala Coast and ride the waves back into shore.
Kayaking is also a popular water sport on the island of Hawaiʻi, especially in the protected waters within the pali kai (breakwall) of Hilo Bay and the numerous coves that dot the Kohala and Kona coasts. You can rent a kayak and head off in a group, or take lessons and a guided tour with someone who knows the best views along the island of Hawaiʻi's coastlines.
